The George Pendergrass Classic No-Gi Tournament
Wake Forest, NC March 11, 2006

The George Pendergrass Classic No Gi Tournament took place this past weekend. It was a great event. If you didn't show up, you surely missed out. There were well over 100 registered competitors who fought it out on four different mats. The GPC showcased an awesome blend of grappling styles ranging from Jiu Jitsu & Judo to Submission Fighting & Wrestling. Teams from all over the Mid Atlantic and Southeast regions were represented. Many competitors found themselves with more matches than they could handle and ended up bowing out of the competition. That goes to show you that you'll always get your money's worth at the GPC Events!

NC represented well with teams coming in from all over the state. The ever present Team ROC competed alongside members of Gustavo Machado's reps from VA & NC. Danny Daniel's East Coast Submissions Academy was represented on the same mats as Yamasaki BJJ. Joe Hurst BJJ had an ARMY of people at the competition. Superior Jiu Jitsu team (headed by Roger "Leprechaun" Carroll) made a good all around showing at the competition. New Bern BJJ/Luiz Palhares team had several representatives as well, including Luiz Rodriguez who just came off a fantastic MMA win in his amateur debut less than 2 weeks ago. Ben Wynkoop also represented New Bern BJJ and made a terrific display of aggressiveness on the mat.

I spent half of the time helping at the scorer's table and was able to witness first hand many of the exciting matches that took place at this event. I watched Tracey Sherriff grapple at least 3 matches in a row with less than a two minute break in between. As the old timers would say, "That kid can go." His determination was admirable. His grappling was smooth and he made some great attempts at leglocks during his run at the absolute crown.

The absolute final was won by Shannon Chau from Gustavo Machado's VA Team. It was a great match for the final between Shannon & Terry Yurk. This match, which I thought may be stopped when Yurk took an accidental kick to the face, was a testament to the gameness of these tournament competitors. For his victory in the final, Shannon won a 1st place medal and a brand spankin' new Gameness Gi donated by tournament sponsor Gameness Fight Wear and the ever popular Frank Mullis.

Everyone who didn't make it should definitely try to come out for the next event. You won't regret spending your money as a competitor or as a spectator. If you are a fan of the grappling arts, then the GPC is where you need to be! God bless and peace to y'all.
